Barramundi
This is a reproduction of a traditional painting named “Barramundi”. The meaning of Barramundi for Aboriginal people is “large-scaled river fish”. The Barramundi were a very valued food source for aboriginal people. The blue and brown circles in the painting represent the life forces of the land and the ocean and the various colours of the circles symbolise the colours of the ocean and land. Song Lines or Footprints are also represented and these are symbols of belonging to the land and sea, the Aboriginal people following the traditional maps of the land they live upon. All barramundi are born male and then turn into females when they are three to four years old. They can travel long distances in a lifetime and swim from fresh water rivers to salt water and during this journey they make the transition from male to female. Barramundi are also quite sensitive to their environment, thriving in clear, unpolluted waters.
